Local Grand Unification and String Theory
The low energy effective action of string theory depends strongly on the process of compactification and the localization of fields in extra dimensions. Explicit string constructions towards the minimal supersymmetric standard model (MSSM) reveal interesting results leading to the concept of local grand unification. Properties of the MSSM indicate that we might live at a special location close ...
متن کاملAnomaly cancellation in M - theory
We show the complete cancellation of gauge and gravitational anomalies in the Mtheory of Horava and Witten using their boundary contribution, and a term coming from the existence of two and five-branes. A factor of three discrepancy noted in an earlier work is resolved. We end with a comment on flux quantization. e-mail: [email protected] In the M-theory of Horava and Witten [1] sever...
متن کاملM-theory and Hypercharge
We discuss the possibility that the electro-weak and strong interactions arise as the low energy effective description of branes in M-theory. As a step towards constructing such a model we show how one can naturally obtain SU(N 1) × SU(N 2) × U(1) gauge theories from branes, including matter in the bi-fundamental representation of SU(N 1) × SU(N 2) which are fractionally charged under U(1).
متن کاملThree - Family Grand Unification in String Theory ∗ †
The outstanding question of string theory is whether it describes our universe. This question turns out to be very difficult to answer as the space of classical string vacua has a very large degeneracy, and there lack objective criteria that would select a particular string vacuum among the numerous possibilities. One might expect non-perturbative string dynamics to lift, partially or completel...
متن کاملAnomaly Cancellation Condition in Lattice Gauge Theory
We show that, to all orders of powers of the gauge potential, a gauge anomaly A defined on 4-dimensional infinite lattice can always be removed by a local counterterm, provided that A depends smoothly and locally on the gauge potential and that A reproduces the gauge anomaly in the continuum theory in the classical continuum limit: The unique exception is proportional to the anomaly in the cont...
